New Black Panther Design Lab Snares For 2017
This year at NAMM 2017 Mapex announced the launch of four new professional level Black Panther snare drums. The new additions form part of the Black Panther Design Lab Series. Created to serve the needs of top level drum players. This series blends sound and performance with a modern chic design.
The Concept Hybrid Approach
Engineered using the Design Lab’s Concept Hybrid approach to sound, shell composition and drum construction. Taking into consideration various different tone woods, bearing edge profiles, counterhoop styles, lug casing, snare wires, drumheads and shell finishes – Mapex has combined these sound concepts to craft unique snares for the most demanding players.
Each of the new Black Panther Design Lab Snare drums uses premium components in their construction. Components like Puresound premium snare wires, Cylinder-Drive Strainer, and SONIClear Bearing edges. Each one is built with the Mapex 10- lug hoops.

The Equinox Snare
As balanced as the day and night twice a year, here is the 14″ Equinox Snare. Crafted from North American Maple featuring classic styling of single- flanged hoops and reinforcement rings. Hear the most subtle of ghost notes and at full volume get that bright and open presence.
The Cherry Bomb Snares
These two 14” and 13” snares are a re-imagined and optimised versions of the original Cherry Bomb snare. Constructed from a medium-thick Cherrywood Shell (the hint was in the name). When struck this snare has a vintage sound and feel, yet comes with all the modern precision and reliability expected from Mapex. The Cherry wood produces a warm and focused tone, with the wood absorbing the higher overtones.
The HeartBreaker Snare
Lastly, is the 14″ HeartBreaker snare. Here’s a solidly built all mahogany drum with reinforcement rings. If you’re looking for dark, rustic throaty sounds of the rock classics, that still manage to blend with today’s alternative styles of music, this snare is for you.
